Resources

AFACTR AmeriCorps is a program of Redwood Community Action Agency. AFACTR is a statewide Child Welfare Redesign program, contracted through Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Prevent Child Abuse California in Sacramento.

The Mission of the AFACTR AmeriCorps is to strengthen Humboldt County communities and families through collaborative work with Family Resource Centers and Child Welfare Services. By providing families with preventative outreach, increasing the awareness of local resources and recruiting foster families, members are reducing family isolation, creating healthy families and improving outcomes of children and families who come into contact with Child Welfare Services.

AFACTR has 10 members who serve 1700 hours per service year. Members are placed within participating Family Resource Centers and directly at Child Welfare Services to help support and sustain families in Humboldt County. We have sites as far south as Redway, north to Orick, and east to Willow Creek.

Our purpose is to strengthen our communities by strengthening the connection of our community members to services and assistance. We receive referrals from DHHS, and other agencies. Members help in the community by:

  • doing home visits,
  • making referrals to various services, such as mental health, counseling, health education, medical and dental services, public assistance access, parenting support, adult education, employment, life skills, family support, recreation and fitness, and technology access.
  • recruiting people to be foster families and respite workers,
  • after school/child care, mentoring/tutoring,
  • crisis support, emergency needs, and food access,
  • parenting support,
  • transportation,
  • assistance with filling out forms for social services,
  • accessing household items,
  • empowering families to take good care of themselves,
  • helping them to make appointments, and more.

We are recruiting for the 2007/2008 service year now.
