The Blue Lake Blues Series, a non-profit, volunteer group, is the blues music element of the Humboldt Folklife Society. Our specific purpose is to develop venues to showcase local blues musicians as well as introducing musicians from out of the area to local blues fans. Our flagship event is the Buddy Brown Blues Festival (previously the Blue Lake Blues Festival) named in memory of our first headliner and local blues favorite, Buddy Brown, who passed away last year. The financial focus of this annual event, held at Perigot Park in Blue Lake in mid-August, is fund raising for one or more local non-profit community programs or activities. This year's beneficiary will be the RAILS TO TRAILS organization's efforts to develop the Arcata to Blue Lake Trail (Annie and Mary railroad). The Blue Festival is the premiere showcase for local blues talent in Humboldt County and was wildly successful in its first year, raising much-needed funds for the SAFE Program (Safe Access For Everyone), a wheelchair ramp construction program for low-income residents of Humboldt County. Our latest endeavor, from which we took our group's name, is the Blue Lake Blues Series, an effort to, again, promote local blues talent and introduce outside talent when available. It is also our intention to help promote the City of Blue Lake as a performing arts center. Using one of the three potentially available venues in Blue Lake -- The Red Radish, DelArte Theatres, and the Grange Hall, we expect to promote up to 6 shows per year. |
