The Straight Up AmeriCorps Program of Redwood Community Action Agency serves K-12th grade youth by placing AmeriCorps members with local schools and community agencies throughout Humboldt County. Straight Up AmeriCorps members serve as academic mentors to the children and youth at their site, providing one-on-one and small group mentoring, as well as large group activities. During after-school programs, Straight Up AmeriCorps members coordinate Health and Wellness activities. AmeriCorps members also design activities that encourage students to become engaged in school and community service, with the overall goal of school success for Humboldt County youth.

Forty-six Straight Up AmeriCorps members serve together in teams of 2-6 at one of our program host sites. Most positions are full-time (1700 hours). There are some part-time opportunities.

The term of service is served over the course of 11 months. Members must meet all requirements of the service term, including attending scheduled service projects and member development opportunities throughout the year, in order to remain eligible for the post-service AmeriCorps educational award. The education award is equivalent to $4,725 for a 1700 hour full-time term of service, or $2,363 for a 900 hour part-time term of service.

Full-time members receive basic health insurance, and may be eligible for child care benefits. All members earn a living allowance for their service hours which is paid twice monthly (full-time=$12,325 per service term and part-time=$6,525 per service term).

Members must be 17 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and a high school graduate (or willing to complete the GED prior to using the earned educational award).

Other preferred qualifications include:
• Experience working with youth
• Volunteer service experience
• At least 2 years college course work
• Fluency in Spanish
• And, READY FOR CHALLENGING SERVICE!

We accept the standard AmeriCorps application and reference forms (which are available on line through the AmeriCorps national website or by calling 1-800-942-2677) as well as any supplemental material you may wish to provide for consideration.
